The Israeli Knesset's Anti-Democratic Agenda | Sabbah Report
An August 18 Zuheir Andreus Haaretz article said "We are all Zuabi," meaning everyone for democratic freedoms is threatened.ACRI filed a petition with Israel's High Court against revoking her parliamentary rights. However, the prevailing Knesset attitude isn't changing, for sure not in the current session in light of so-called peace talks, ongoing settlement construction, and hard-liners pushing a reactionary agenda overall.Additional Winter Session Issues Affecting Human Rights(1) Planning and Housing ReformA new law will have "far-reaching implications" for all Israelis by impairing public [more...]

Five Ways People Are Working to Put School Bullying in Check ...
It emphasizes, as leader-teacher Tina Owen says, “building compassion and teaching acceptance for all people” through “preventative practice so that we are addressing unkind deeds and words before they become bullying.” Students participate directly in creating school policies, through student government organizations. Harassment forms are always available. And the school works toward fulfilling the principle that “no one ever says ‘we can’t do anything about that.’ ” (Photo by Ryan Stanton) Make It Comprehensive The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program also starts with a [more...]

New York Trying to Bully Crisis Pregnancy Centers « Social Justice ...
New York State is trying to bully Crisis Pregnancy Centers, forcing them to put up signs that proclaim they don’t do abortions or refer for abortions. This is something that the abortion industry has been pushing for in many states in a effort to protect their baby killing business. This New York Times article is so biased you might think it was actually written by the President of NARAL or Planned Parenthood. The author actually sites an study done by NARAL Pro-choice America trying to discredit Crisis Pregnancy Centers. That is kind of like letting the tobacco industry do a study on [more...]

Guest post by Tad Tietze: Doomed to repetition? The Left and the ...
Despite these shortcomings, Judt’s willingness to put the politics of social justice ahead of economics will rightly inspire many readers. Social attitude surveys in the Anglophone neoliberal countries repeatedly reveal broad and rising support for traditional social democratic policies, even as ‘progressive’ politicians implement the opposite. This has led some to see the re-emergence of an old-style social democracy as a necessary first step in building a radical Left. Judt’s inability to pull together a semi-coherent program speaks to the dangers of relying on such a self-limiting [more...]

Glenn Beck, Jim Wallis and the Nazis | Gladys Ganiel
There is a good argument to be made that prominent confessing church pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer would share many of the convictions of today’s ‘social justice’ Christians. In his book on Bonhoeffer, Religionless Christianity: Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Troubled Times, (T&T Clark, 2008) religion scholar Jeffrey C. Pugh argues both implicitly and explicitly that it is the type of religion and politics that someone like Beck promotes – a ‘Christian America’ that is allied to a particular political party and favours foreign military interventions – that should be viewed with suspicion. Rooting Intergroup Relations for Social Justice: A Curricular ...
Vital for the future of racial justice, then, is the consolidation, critical analysis, and dissemination of knowledge currently housed in the minds and offices of disparate individuals and organizations. Rooting Intergroup Relations for Social Justice will catalyze such change. By collaborating with organizational leadership across the country to locate and evaluate the relationship-building curricula developed to date by and for communities of color, our recommendations for adaptation and further use will amplify their voices and help ensure that other social justice workers can benefit from [more...]

In relation to the social justice principle an adherent of this new politics would need to be committed to reducing overall inequality (as defined by an agreed metric) and increasing relative social mobility (people going down as well as people going up). They would also recognise that certain phenomena in society are hard or impossible to square with a fair society and would explore ways of stopping or mitigating them. These might include excessive inherited wealth, extreme ratios between top earners and low earners in organisations, and private education or socially segregated state [more...]

Venezuela's Cultural Revolution | venezuelanalysis.com
However the Sistema frames its mission - and under Chavez it has stressed social justice more often than it used to - the most important lesson for the world may be the way it makes music a communal and shared process. I notice this most strongly at a simple repertory concert in the city university's spartan auditorium. A group of children, none of them older than eight, has come from an out-of-town nucleo to hear the Bolivars. Though gasping with excitement to see their heroes, they are shushed by elders, even during the pauses between movements. Eventually they sit rapt. If these kids are [more...]

In a talk that outlined his experiences with public service at Harvard and beyond, Duncan called the battle for quality education a social justice issue, and urged the audience to take up the fight. “We need to make education our national mission. I invite you to a life of service that embraces that mission. Be a teacher. Tutor a child. Volunteer at a school. Transform the life chances of our nation’s young people.” Prior to joining the Obama administration, Duncan was chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools, where he implemented a number of reforms, including expanding [more...]

For example, if you studied philosophy in school, that means you can analyze multiple arguments and find creative solutions to the problems, which are similar skills needed to excel in marketing. Finding the marketing-related skills that you know and learning how to present them is key for success. This requires some self-education. Employers are flexible for non-marketing students if you can show that you do have a general knowledge of key concepts. Often, this can be done by reading books on marketing or taking a short course on the subject of interest. This also shows employers you’re [more...]

Synonyms to Ponder: A Reflection on the Lectionary Readings for 24 ...
I realize as I write this that I’m flying in the faces both of those concerned with social justice and those who have a strong sense of double-predestination. And although one objection has more to do with the earth that breathing people inhabit and the other with the world that folks inhabit after they’ve stopped breathing, I think both objections at least need to exist in tension with big claims like this one in Luke. Certainly the New Testament is no stranger either to the idea that those who proudly assert themselves as lords of the earth will face their day of judgment (cf. the [more...]

My younger daughter is now 26 and she has no beliefs whatsoever. She has an uncanny ability to live "in the moment". I am confidant that she will find her way as best she can as she matures. Nagoya, Japan, 18 October 2010 -Environmental and social justice groups warn that incentives for wood-based bio-energy will trigger dramatic biodiversity loss, as forests and grasslands are converted to monocultures. Present policies have failed to halt habitat-loss and reduce pressures on species and ecosystems. While tougher actions are needed, the Global [more...]

There was a homeless person standing nearby, rattling a can and begging for donations. "Get a job," yelled preppy #1 at the homeless man. As another example, Obama has intentionally only bludgeoned the economy into almost non-existence. What has he done? And what effect did it have? That is what you need to look at. Doubtless one can find sad examples of such reductionism, but the sweeping condescension toward our evangelical forbears is neither true nor kind. Ecofeminism and the right to water
Water has been defined as a human right – the South African government admits that water is a natural right that all people should have access to. Granted, South Africa is not the best example when it comes to implementation of equitable water practices, but the government has taken the step to declare water a natural right. Yet access to water, the right to water, is still debated, couched in legalese, allowing nations to disregard it and manipulate that right how they see fit at the moment in time. The right to water has been marginalized much as women have been. ‘She’ (the sea, [more...]

RELIGION IN AMERICAN HISTORY: SNCC, Faith, and Social Justice

Commentary - Why equity and social justice matter - The McGill Daily
Social justice discourse demands of its participants respect for others and their struggles, historical and current; it does not call everyone to fall in line with a pre-approved, rubber-stamped PC lexicon. All rights have attached responsibilities to ensure community balance and cooperation. Free speech is no different. Clubs are student funded and thus must be held accountable to SSMU council and its legislation. The equity policy and equity complaints procedure guarantee students that their money is being used responsibly. Free speech is not contravened when a club is held accountable to [more...]
