Convert Journal: Social justice

The Catholic teaching of social justice reflects our obligation to love one another. It guides our conscience and actions with every person made in God's image, regardless of how they may differ from us or even how they treat us. This broad teaching at its core, affirms the dignity of the person. We hold that all human life is sacred, from the moment of conception to natural death. The respect for human dignity is the basis of our social teaching. Simply put, every person is our brother or sister and should be treated accordingly by us individually and by government. We are one community in [more...]

"Economic Justice" as "Social Justice", Christian News Commentary

"Economic Justice" as "Social Justice" Dr. Paul Kengor Grove City College July 30, 2010 Editor's Note: A longer version of this article first appeared in American Thinker. Historically, social justice has meant different things to different people, and equally so today, where the term remains as frustratingly elusive as ever. Like the very progressives that champion the term, the definition seems to evolve based on progressives' ever-evolving purposes. Most exasperating is that many who speak the language of social justice really mean "economic justice." Unlike traditional [more...]

We Hold These Truths…

What about human rights? If, like morality, human rights are part of a mutually agreed upon code of behavior, how can these rights be inalienable? What if everybody does not agree? For example, what gives us the right to tell other nations that their human rights record is dismal?  Why should we be so outraged when human rights are not respected? If the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is not conferred to us by our Creator, then by whom or by what is it conferred? By majority rule? If so, then these rights are not inalienable at all. What if the majority decides by mutual [more...]

Analysts need to go beyond the old blanket dichotomies of globalization as either a force for the repression of human rights or as a panacea for improving their protection. A second theme is how to assign responsibility for human rights. Therefore, any steps towards further developing these linkages have to actively involve governments–though other institutions may influence human rights conditions, the [more...]

UAW Workers Picket The UAW Over Two-Tier « The Rustbelt Radical

Yet the UN Charter on Human Rights clearly states that every human being has a “right to work.” The early builders of our UAW believed unequivocally in the concept—they believed that we own our jobs. So if we own our jobs, then the companies have no right to eliminate them—or hold our jobs hostage to force more and more unjust concessions. Moreover, the concessions demanded of workers at Lake Orion—affecting the non-trades workers with the lowest seniority—are discriminatory in that they will disproportionately hurt workers of color and women. “The blind leading the blind” – ethical unease when discussing ...

This book is unashamedly postmodernist, deconstructionist, and against the Western way of doing many things, and has as its core case study the idea of education as the worst kind of “human right,” which in turn it describes as the Western secular Gospel of the past 60 years.  If one steps back from this initially-surprising idea, it actually kind of makes sense; human rights has a tendency, for example to have states step in and quash local cultures and their method of justice.  As one individual quoted in the book mentions, “how is the Western idealized conception of justice as a [more...]
