Earth Day 2009: Do environmental rights= human rights?
From www.witness.org We'd love to hear from you - please respond in the comments section or via video response. What images come to mind when you think of human rights? Pictures of torture, unjust detention, police brutality, political persecution? Or do you think about climate change? What about when you think of the environmental movement? Do you picture oceans, forests, whales, butterflies? Or do you think about people? (read more here hub.witness.org Although the environmental and human rights movements are sometimes perceived as two different things - especially in many developed countries like the United States - in much of the world they are closely intertwined. In March 2009, two WITNESS staff members Kelly Matheson and Priscila Neri traveled to the annual meeting of the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide to speak activists from around the world about this connection. We asked them: do environmental rights = human rights? The responses we heard were so illuminating that we decided to make this short video about what they told us. Share your thoughts with us too!

Tiananmen Square 20 Years Later: Human Rights in China
Complete video at: fora.tv Kenneth Roth discusses the current state of human rights in China. He argues that while the US may not be willing to challenge China due to economic interests, the future of Chinese stability rests on liberty issues like free speech. ----- As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights celebrates its 60th anniversary, events in the Balkans, Sudan and Myanmar continue to challenge its idealism, while raising new questions about the prospects for humanitarian interventions. Do human rights transcend national borders and customs? Is the definition of human rights changing? Kenneth Roth is the executive director of Human Rights Watch, a post he has held since 1993. Human Rights Watch investigates, reports on, and seeks to curb human rights abuses in some 70 countries. From 1987 to 1993, Mr. Roth served as deputy director of the organization. Previously, he was a federal prosecutor for the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington. He also worked in private practice as a litigator.

Human Rights lawyers eg in EHRC are what's called 'left wing' - this doesn't mean they believe in sharing wealth - especially not their own! Nor in equality! It means they want to destroy this country. A group of such lawyers is ready at all times to take taxpayers' money NB EHRC quango ('Equality and Human Rights Commission') is fronted by a Guyanan immigrant. Guyana is in South America. The Tyrannicide Brief: The Human Rights Story (Part 1)
One of the most significant developments of modern times is expanded protection for universal human rights. But where did the notion of universal human rights begin? Renowned human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson traces some of that history to one man, John Cooke, a radical lawyer who in 1649 "made tyranny a crime" as he prosecuted a king for waging war on his own people. In his book, The Tyrannicide Brief, Robertson explains how the trial of Charles I - the first trial of a head of state - was the precursor of modern proceedings against Augusto Pinochet, Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein. Robertson himself was involved in the cases against Pinochet and Hussein.

Human Rights Video: Right to Privacy
Human Right #12: Everyone has the right to privacy in their homes, their communications and their personal affairs. To broadly raise awareness of the 30 inalienable rights as proclaimed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Church of Scientology sponsored the production of a corresponding series of Public Service Announcements illuminating these rights. Each is intended to provide young people with an appreciation of a fundamental tenet within every free society, so that the generation of tomorrow need not repeat the errors of its predecessors.

Colombian Government Jails Human Rights Activists
www.humanrightsfirst.org - A human rights advocate since university, Principe Gabriel González has spent years exposing degrading treatment of Colombian political prisoners. Ironically, Gonzálezs advocacy led to his own arrest and detention. He was detained for over one year, lived in exile to escape judicial harassment, and now faces seven more years in prison on trumped-up charges if his appeal to Colombias Supreme Court is not successful. González credits Human Rights Firsts relentless advocacy for his freedom.
