Down in Dartonia « Beanbags and Bullsh!t
Posted by: beanbagsandbullsh1t | October 18, 2010 Down in Dartonia I imagine problems with the Dartington estate broadband system prevented Nick Temple from continuing his insights into last week’s SSE residential. Either way, I’m happy to pick up the baton. I was at the residential as a member of this year’s SSE London block group. While the highlight of my week was undoubtedly joining fellow mental health social entrepreneur, Steve Light, in a karaoke interpretation of Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight, my stay in Devon also provoked some thinking about how we do social [more...]

Florence Nightingale: Religious Motivation & Social Reform ...
Lynn McDonald, Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Guelph, will lecture on the topic, Florence Nightingale: Religious Motivation & Social Reform. McDonald is a noted social scientist and former Canadian Member of Parliament. She is the editor of the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, as well as numerous books and articles. McDonald argues that although Nightingale is much revered as a nurse, we have failed to appreciate that she is also a fully modern heroine and intellectual in her own right. The lecture will be held at at 5pm on Thursday 14 October in Lecture [more...]

Toward a renewed Christian social democracy « A Thinking Reed
I enjoyed this article by historian-theologian Gary Dorrien on the prospects for a Christian version of social and economic democracy. According to Dorrien, while the dreams of a radical transformation of the economic system seem more distant than ever, they are still incredibly urgent, particularly in the wake of the financial collapse and the looming environmental crisis. Dorrien provides an overview of American Protestant thinking on capitalism and socialism during the 20th century. Interestingly, proponents of the Social Gospel, in his accounting, come out looking better than some of [more...]

Are “Justice” and “Social Justice” Synonymous?
The idea of “social justice” stems from cultural perspectives shaped by two developments of the late twentieth century: the rise of mass consumption and the heritage of the civil rights movement. The former fueled a growing preoccupation with wealth distribution, and the latter provided an energizing myth that animated the redistributive ethic. With so many utopian, redistributionist thinkers in and out of government promoting “social justice,” you’d think they—or, at least, somebody—would have a clear definition in mind of just what they’re pushing for; not exactly: The term [more...]

Christianity's Role in the Abolition of Cruelty « The Veritas Network
As for a man who closes his heart to faith, he cannot look at history objectively and he fails to see the incredible and pervasive good Christianity has done for the world in areas of social justice, knowledge, and what will be the primary focus of this article: Christianity’s role in the abolishing and curbing of cruelty. Christianity really is and has been good for the world as true believers have taken the words of Jesus to: “be merciful as your heavenly father is merciful.” I have done a little bit of research and have found the following (actually small) list of historical [more...]

Social Motivation for Recycling
In a search for individual incentive to participate in recycling, we considered a social motivation instead of an environmental or financial motivation. Due to the cheaper purchase cost of recycled materials, portions of the funds could be given to local social causes and with the recycled materials still being sold to companies for cheaper than purchasing new raw materials. The portion given to social services could benefit local education and ease cost burdens on the [more...]

The Daily Campus - Socialism still dangerous for US
The definition continues, "any of various systems of liberal social democracy which retain a commitment to social justice and social reform, or feature some degree of state intervention in the running of the economy." Current economic thought advocates this very thing, from the highest levels of government to college and high school classrooms. In high school, I spent four years with religion teachers who told me that social justice was not only a logical means to protect human rights, but a mandate that every Christian must follow. To justify their beliefs, they selected horrible acts of [more...]

Seeing, Thinking, and Acting
An example might involve trying to increase awareness of people’s vulnerability to accidents involving talking or texting while driving. The language used would need to highlight the fact that such accidents are not caused by careless people (i.e., making it easy for people to say I am not careless, so that won’t happen to me) but instead by people who had a momentary lapse in their vigilance (i.e., which everyone can say they have experienced). People need to understand exactly what action they should take to explicitly address the injustice you have asked them to think about Under no [more...]

Intrinsic Motivation Drives Meaningful Behavior
In it, Pink examines the puzzle of motivation, starting with the fact that there is a mismatch between what social scientists know and what business does. In his presentation, he elaborates on how “if/then” reward strategies destroy creativity and how productivity, engagement, and job satisfaction soar when autonomy and mastery are at the core of a company’s recognition culture. Pink reinforces the difference between incentives and rewards and sets aside the issue of compensation once and for all. He explains how a high-tech high-touch approach to rewarding employees with [more...]

Older Adults and Social Media, Part II: Talking with the Experts ...
David Dombrosky just had a great quote over at the arts marketing blog salon that I agree with: “When social media sites are used with a motivation for engagement rather than self-promotion, they often lead to those desired marketing outcomes of increased sales and brand awareness.” BRIAN REICH: The age of the audience has never mattered as much to me, and the people I advise. Everyone’s lives are influenced by technology — and now the Internet. Adoption was consistent across different age groups, but the usage patterns were very different, and that was where my focus has [more...]

Spike in School Education Civil Rights Cases: Can't Speak English ...
Russlynn Ali, director of the Office of Civil Rights, said the reason for the increase in complaints is unclear, but believes students, parents and administrators have more faith that officials will take action. Gerald A. Reynolds, head of OCR for the Bush administration from 2001 to 2003, said the increase is more likely a reflection of the different approach taken by Democrats — with Republicans running the civil rights office as a law-enforcement shop, and Democrats focusing on social change. “The notion that we were stepchildren, that’s a narrative that’s being conjured up, but it [more...]

Motivation in the classroom (Skinner & Belmont, 1993) « Reading ...
The source of motivation is internal to the child, so that when the social surround provides for children’s basic psychological needs, motivation will flourish. The power of specific teacher behaviors are derived from their effectiveness in providing for students’ basic needs. The extent to which children’s basic psychological needs are met or ignored in the school context is reflected in their self-system processes (attitudes and beliefs about the self). These self-appraisals are the proximal predictors of student motivation. These needs include the needs to be competent, autonomous, [more...]

Their multiple crisis and our solutions: an ecosocialist ...
First, public spending should generate public employment in labour-intensive social services such as education, child care, nursing homes, health, community and social services. The need for social services is not met under the present circumstances, where they are provided either at very low wages (to ensure an adequate profit) or as a luxury service for the upper classes or via invisible unpaid female labour within the gendered division of labour in the private sphere. To avoid this deficit they can be provided by the state or by non-profit/community organizations. The gender aspect of [more...]

Can the Philippines ever recover? « CIVICUS Civil Society Index
The private armies remain, justice has not been provided for human rights abuses and military and police impunity has not been addressed. Since Aquino took office on 30 June, human rights organisations have reported the killings of three journalists and 16 leftists’ activists. There have been no convictions in the hundreds of politically motivated killings over the past decade in which security forces were implicated. Just three of the 19 recent killings have a suspect under investigation and there has been only one arrest. Indeed, the poverty rate continues to climb, despite the rise in [more...]

Philadelphia Freedom Blog: Lazy rich people
Philadelphia Freedom Blog Raising hell in the fight for democracy, human rights, and social justice -- from here in the cradle of liberty, the City of Brotherly Love Two clean-cut preppy-type young men emerged from the late-model Jaguar that shared a parking lot with my 10-year-old Corolla. There was a homeless person standing nearby, rattling a can and begging for donations. "Get a job," yelled preppy #1 at the homeless man. "Yeah, I'm not gonna give you money for being lazy," said preppy #2. This reminded me of George W. Bush, who allegedly told one of his Harvard Business School [more...]

The GICD program began in 2007 as a partnership between MORI, Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of New England and Bigelow Nurseries, one of the largest nurseries in Massachusetts. Transportation from urban areas to the farm was an issue, so LSS secured use of a van, and clients were able to start working in March 2008. LSS also created a Vocational English Language Training program that focused on nursery and greenhouse industry terminology and provided interpreter [more...]

“We are wasting too much time!” This is the statement spoken far too often by salespeople and their managers when it comes to social media sites, especially Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter.
