Kentucky Candidates Spar Over Who Is Anti-Christian | The Atlantic ...
Having said that, "you do wonder if being on the wrong side of the dominant majority might sensitize Rand Paul to the need for things like the Civil Rights Act. A mean ad about your anti-Christian college pranks isn't comparable, of course, to being the target of a state-sponsored campaign of terror and discrimination against you and everyone who looks like you. But the emotions that Conway is playing on here are the same that, in an amplified and legally unchecked environment, can lead to the persecution of those who don't find themselves comfortably within the majority's [more...]

Kenya's government heralded the country's new constitution as a "fresh start," but human rights groups said Friday that new reports of killings and illegal extraditions raise questions about whether any real changes have been made. The International Center for Policy and Conflict alleged that five men have been killed by police officers since the constitution became law in August. The government denies knowledge of the killings. Eight Kenyan suspects also have been illegally extradited to Uganda, the group said. The new constitution, which was heavily backed by U.S. President Barack Obama, was [more...]

Hill was told he was being stopped for “illegal discharge of a passenger and blocking the street.” He was not charged. Feds Clear FBI Agents In Shooting Of Michigan Imam « WWJ Newsradio 950
Four FBI agents who shot and killed a Michigan mosque leader during a 2009 raid have been cleared of criminal and civil right violations by the Justice Department’s civil rights division. The department announced its findings Wednesday. Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah was shot 20 times during an Oct. 28, 2009, raid at a suburban Detroit warehouse. Federal authorities have said agents shot and killed Abdullah only after the Detroit cleric fired at them as they tried to arrest him. The agents, who have not been identified, have previously been cleared of wrongdoing by Michigan Attorney General [more...]

Struggle of immigrants is a continuation of the civil rights ...
Struggle of immigrants is a continuation of the civil rights movement The Hill - Today, I want to talk about two important words: Hard Work. I want to talk about the men and women who clear the dishes in restaurants. The man who supports his family by working as a janitor. The women bent over sewing machines making our clothes — the women caring for America’s children – the families picking America’s fruit. It’s hard work. Yet immigrants come to our nation to work at dangerous and sometimes demeaning jobs, to face the risk of discrimination and deportations. They come to do hard [more...]

In a dramatic development that could shake the political leadership of the Justice Department, career lawyer Christopher Coates has sent a letter to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights offering to testify Friday on matters related to the controversial New Black Panthers voter-intimidation case. Ten months ago, Coates, the award-winning former chief of the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division, was subpoenaed by the Commission to testify about the case. He was subsequently instructed by DOJ officials to ignore the subpoena. Within the past hour, commissioners were informed that Chairman [more...]

The system has many problems, according to human rights organizations, but among the biggest is its treatment of the detainees. Some argue that illegal immigrants broke the law and should not be in a “Club Med-like” setting, as a spokesman from the pro-enforcement group Federation for American Immigration Reform said. But deportation is a civil process, and immigrant rights groups argue it is too often punitive, as if detainees have been convicted of a crime. On Oct. 6, Detention Watch Network, the National Immigrant Justice Center and the Midwest Coalition for Human Rights released a [more...]

Justice Department stands behind controversial Tennessee mosque ...
The U.S. Justice Department filed a legal brief Monday stating its support of the continued construction of a controversial mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, that was targeted by arsonists in August. In the friend-of-the-court brief - filed in response to a lawsuit brought by local landowners against Rutherford County, Tennessee - the department argued that practicing Islam is a freedom protected under the First Amendment of the Constitution. "A mosque is quite plainly a place of worship, and the county rightly recognized that it had an obligation to treat mosques the same as churches, [more...]

DOJ Civil Rights Head Goes To TN To Reassure Muslims ...
For 50% of the cases brought against Muslims in the U.S. to be dismissed means that these charges were either without a legal basis or unsupported by probable cause, meaning that there was insufficient evidence to convince an ordinary, reasonable person that there is a basis to remand the accused to trial. This is far from the “beyond reasonable doubt” standard needed to convict. Thus, for over half of the cases not to have risen to this low threshold, particularly in light of the national percentage in federal cases, is quite telling. The other cases, with the exception of a dozen or [more...]

In February, 2007, an African-American deputy filed a complaint with the Ohio Civil rights Commission alleging that he was punished more strictly for violating an inter-office policy than white deputies who violated the policy. At the time he was the only African-American deputy in the office. There were roughly 40 white deputies. In November of that year he filed a race discrimination claim in Ohio court alleging discrimination and retaliation. The plaintiffs do not have to explain why their theory invalidates Medicare and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, both of which fall under any originalist theory of the Commerce Clause. The simple answer is that it doesn’t. Second, it puts the government lawyers on a slippery slope, by forcing them explain why the U.S., if it can require individuals to get health care coverage, cannot also mandate that everyone eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, or enroll in yoga classes—or pay a hefty penalty if they do not. Kirk Tanter's Blog: Emmitt Till remembered
Most people believe that the beginnning of the Civil Rights Movement was when Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to White Man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama during the Jim Crow Segregaton era. Parks actions ignited the year-long Montgomery Bus Boycott, which introduced Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the world. But consious African-Americans living in 1955 will say it was the day that Emmett Till died. Emmett Louis Till in the summer of 1955 in Mississippi, allegedly whistled at a white woman at a local grocery store where the white woman worked. Days later a mob of white [more...]

US Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s… at PLHS – Support for Learning
In particular, this week we are looking at racial segregation in the US and the Civil Rights Movement led by Dr Martin Luther King Jnr. One of the key sub-plots in Hairspray is exclusion of those who are different to the majority. The lead role is that of an overweight teenager who wants to be a dancer on a famous television show but is excluded because she is too heavy. Meanwhile, on the very same show black youths are only allowed to appear once a month – on something called “Negro Day”. We decided that we would like to find out more as to why this kind of segregation happened, who [more...]

Then there's the civil rights movement in America, which came about after positive changes had started occurring, but didn't seem to be moving fast enough. That brings us to Barack Obama. There's a reason Barack Obama has a 90% approval rate with black Americans. They're looking at him like Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson, or Rosa Parks. In other words, Barack Obama isn't just another President; to many black Americans he's a stand-in for them and his success or failure reflects on them personally. The former workers sued, arguing that World Vision is a humanitarian group and therefore not protected under the Title VII exemption of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
