Last week the Democratic leader of the state Senate said the state should provide child care for people no longer on welfare, among $470 million worth of other social services. Consequently, Sen. The vetoes created a modest $1.3 billion reserve. Last year, the governor’s vetoes created a mere $500 million reserve. California ended the year $4.8 billion in the red. Mr. Steinberg focuses on what government can do. [more...]

Department of Social Services in California is simply at best a cattle line, people come in and they go out, most of them if they chose to eliminate pride are taken care of fairly, they are given vouchers for single room occupancy hotels, General Relief, and food stamps. In the streets this is the “Grand-Slam”. However the hotel expires in 30 days. “GR” and the food stamp program are limited as well, there must be some paperwork filed, and evidence of job searching. California does have a program that is mandatory to attend, which teaches folks how to look for, interview for, and [more...]

How Do the Poor Describe Poverty? | Christian Blog on Child Poverty
This description of poverty includes lack of access to social services, “fear for the future,” “powerlessness” and “lack of representation.” This description shows a broadening of the World Bank’s understanding of poverty, but it does not replace or contradict its own $1.25 per day standard for extreme poverty. The World Bank has also developed indicators to assess non-income dimensions of poverty. These indicators include education, health, access to social services, vulnerability, social exclusion, and access to social capital. During the mid to late 1990s, Robert Chambers, [more...]

The first instalment of Professor Eileen Munro’s review of children’s social services in England was released this month and those involved in child protection will find much to agree with in her assessments so far. This first instalment identifies that a key question for the review is why the well-intentioned reforms of the past haven’t worked and a number of findings about how the system works have been identified and will be tested during the course of the review.
